About Yap State Court
The judicial power of Yap is vested in the Yap State Court, which was certified in 1982. The State Court is comprised of the trial and appellate divisions. The trial division has original jurisdiction over most civil and criminal matters, and the appellate division has the jurisdiction to review all decisions of the trial division.
The Yap State Court routinely hears civil, criminal, small claims, and traffic cases. Additionally, the Yap State Court handles petitions relating to probate, name change, adoption, guardianship, and marriage, among other things.
Organization of the Yap State Court
The Yap State Court consists of four offices, and its organization is set forth in the Organizational Chart.
Office of the Clerk of Courts Services
In addition to providing support to the Office of the Justices and Office of Court Administration, the Office of the Clerk of Courts provides many services to the public. These services include birth certificate access, notary services, marriage and dissolution forms, and information on filing small claims cases.
Small Claims Court
The Yap State Court recently created a Basic Guide to Small Claims Court. This guide is for those who wish to handle their own small claims cases.
